Encouragement and inspiration to living a better life can happen in the most unlikely ways, places, and/or people … if our minds and hearts are open and searching.
For example, there is a scene in a movie my family and I love. It is the movie “Second Hand Lions” starring Robert Duval, Michael Caine, and Haley Joel Osment. It is the story of a young boy (Osment) who is dumped by his dysfunctional mother on his two aging uncles (Duval and Caine).
“Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things (an adult) needs to believe in the most."
The scene that I especially love happens one night when Walter (Osment) confronts his uncle Hub (Duval) wanting to know the truth about something he has heard. Truth, in this exchange, is empirical truth, factual truth. Hub goes on to lift Walter’s perspective from the importance of empirical, factual truth to something far higher and more relevant to making life better. Hub tells Walter:
“Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things (an adult) needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. That honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money … money and power mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil. And I want you to remember this … that love … true love never dies! Remember that boy … remember that. Doesn’t matter if it is true or not, a (person) should believe in those things , because those are the things worth believing in … got that?”
My life has been made so much richer since I have become more open to sources of encouragement and inspiration which help me accept and believe in myself and also love, accept, and listen to people outside of those who look, think, and believe like me.
Think about it.
You are loved. Peace.
