Even though it has been many years ago I can still remember those dreaded torture devices I experienced in high school, college, and seminary. The dreaded and feared final exams. Oh how I wished that I could have gotten a copy of those things about a month ahead of the Inquisitorial appointment.
What about the time when we will come to the end of the term with this time of learning called life? What if we had a copy of the FINAL EXAM ahead of time so we could be prepared for what was to come?
What if it is about caring enough about people around us in the here and now who are less fortunate than we are to help them by sharing what we have to make their lives better?
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’” Matthew 25:34-36 (NLT)
What if it is not all about getting more and more people to join a club and sit in the clubhouse for an hour or so on Sunday morning? What if it is not all about answering questions correctly concerning someone who lived some two millennia ago? What if it is about caring enough about people around us in the here and now who are less fortunate than we are to help them by sharing what we have to make their lives better? What if it is not a merit-based system that depends on whether or not they deserve our help? What if it is not about a “sweet by and by” but a more heavenly here and now that we do have the means to bring about if we will care a little more about you and a little less about me?
Think about it.
